Fight to Keep Voting Rights Act Protections
Voting Rights Are Under Attack—Here’s How We Fight Back (and Feel Good Doing It)
Let’s be realistic for a moment: voting rights in the U.S. are in trouble. But the good news is we’ve got the tools, the people, and the power to fight back. It starts with awareness and education and ends with collective action that feels good and makes a real difference.
At Feel Good Action, we’re here to help you channel your understanding of the issues into action that protects our right to vote. We believe voting is essential to how we build the community we want now and in the future. It is vital now more than ever to protect this fundamental right for future generations. But first, are YOU ready to vote?
🧠 A Quick History: What Is the Voting Rights Act?
In 1965, after years of organizing and marching and surviving police violence, civil rights activists helped pass the Voting Rights Act (VRA). This game-changing law prohibited racist voting restrictions like literacy tests (try one here!) and gave the federal government power to stop voter suppression before it happened.
60 years later, politicians across the country (federally and locally) are still slowly — and sometimes not-so-slowly — chipping away at the protections given in the Voting Rights Act and limiting access to the ballot box, especially for black and brown voters.
In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court basically gutted the VRA. TLDR: In Shelby County v. Holder, SCOTUS basically ruled that the method for how the federal government reviews which states need approval to make changes to their voting laws was outdated. This rollback to the VRA made it easier for election officials to change voting rules in some states (including those with a history of voter suppression) without federal oversight.
Since that ruling in 2013, some states have begun protecting voting rights at the state-level. There has also been unsuccessful Congressional effort to update and restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act (for example, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act).
🚨 What’s Happening Now?
In 2025, we’re seeing major threats to voting rights and democracy that are affecting our right to vote now:
Voter suppression is still everywhere. States are closing polling places (more than 1 in 5 closed over the last decade alone), cutting early voting, purging voters, and pushing voter ID laws that disproportionately harm Black, brown, Indigenous, women, disabled, young, and low-income voters.
Misinformation is flooding our feeds. Bad actors are using poorly regulated social media to confuse voters and spread misinformation and disinformation about when, where, and how to vote. (Check out our convo with Ahmed Baba on this issue.)
Some officials are abusing their power to control how elections are run and who gets to vote. From discriminatory gerrymandering by state legislatures (like this proposed redistricting in TX which also led to legislators getting creative with their resistance) to threats of political violence, anti-democratic moves are on the rise — and they’re often hidden in legal jargon and legislative loopholes.
All of this is designed to make you feel confused and powerless. But you can help stop these attacks - it’s not too late!
💪 What You Can Do Right Now
We believe that doing good can (and should) feel good. Here’s how to start fighting back:
Follow organizations that track voting rights updates in real time (like us 👋).
Post trusted and accurate information. Debunk myths. Double-check your info. Use your voice — online and in your community.
Call your representatives and tell them to pass laws to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act for everyone. (Did you know: States can enact their own version of the VRA!)
Show up for local elections. Your school board, city council, and ballot measures matter. (There are elections every month!)
Become a digital or community activist, or lead a voter registration drive or voter resource group in your school or community. (Here’s how FGA can help!)
💥 Why It Matters
The Voting Rights Act was a turning point in American history, but it came from everyday people taking action. We need people who care about climate justice, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive freedom, and economic equality to protect the process that allows us to fight for all of it.
That means fighting for fair elections. Calling out and correcting disinformation. Making sure everyone in your circle is registered and ready to vote. And doing it all in a way that makes civic action feel good!
