Navigating Anti-LGBTQIA+ Bills Across the Nation
As we near the end of Pride Month in the United States, there are mixed and uncertain feelings amongst the LGBTQIA+ community. With the recent SCOTUS ruling on U.S. v. Skrmetti there is increased anxiety about whether there will be future restrictions or challenges on LGBTQIA+ rights on a larger scale. This unease is not unfounded, with the number of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills proposed in state legislatures increasing each year. In 2025 alone, there are 597 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills in state legislatures. These bills include restrictions on accessible healthcare, lacking accurate identification, weakening nondiscrimination laws, and censoring school curricula.
At the same time, the LGBTQIA+ community celebrates significant milestones in history during the month of June. The landmark decision in Obergfell v. Hodges in 2015granted the fundamental right to same-sex marriage. Another milestone includes the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Inn Rebellion, where activists fought the police who frequently raided gay bars and arrested individuals for the criminal offense of homosexuality. These pivotal moments in LGBTQIA+ history are reminders of how far we have come, but sit in juxtaposition with the increased attacks on LGBTQIA+ rights and are difficult to process. It is a poignant reminder that the fight for equity and acceptance is not yet over. Now is the time to get involved in speaking up for the rights and freedoms that everyone deserves. If you are wondering what action you can take, we recommend educating yourself on the anti-LGBTQIA+ bills being considered in your state so you can contact your representatives or organize with your community locally.
