Gun Legislation Ruling
This ruling comes just one month after the mass shooting at a Texas elementary school that killed 19 children and 2 teachers, and after 4 people were killed in a shooting in an Oklahoma hospital; both of which happened just 1 week after the mass shooting at a New York supermarket that killed 10 people in a racially motivated attack. This Supreme Court decision imposes a dangerous ‘guns everywhere’ agenda that will make communities across the United States less safe.
Because this legislation has been struck down at a federal level, the power to determine gun regulation in public is no longer in the hands of each individual state. Federal courts across the country have ruled time and time again that gun safety laws ARE constitutional and not in conflict with the Second Amendment. However, this Supreme Court decision could affect gun regulation in every state at every level. There is NO evidence suggesting that gun ownership increases safety. Instead, research suggests that the presence of any gun increases the risk of homicide and suicide. There are 7x as many gun crimes as there are instances of defensive gun use each year.
Strong, common sense gun laws, which a majority of Americans support, have been proven to reduce gun violence. States with stronger gun laws experience lower levels of gun violence. There are so many communities that are impacted at disproportionate rates:
Women in the US are 16x more likely to be shot and killed than women in other developed nations.
Black Americans are 10x more likely than white Americans to die by gun homicide.
Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens.
LGBTQ hate crimes are on the rise, with half of victims being killed by firearms.
A young Native American commits suicide with a gun every six days in the United States.
Together we CAN prevent senseless gun violence by voting for gun responsibility champions at the state and local level who will prioritize common sense gun safety reforms. We know what works to save lives from gun violence, we can see it in the data. It is up to us to elect leaders who reflect our values with the courage to act. We can turn our sadness, anger, confusion, and outrage into action now! Make sure you’re verified and registered to vote, and please register to vote if you aren’t. And when the time comes, use your VOTE in your state to speak out for gun safety! Knowing how and where to vote in your state is critical as this affects gun regulation in every state at every level.
